The most common neurodevelopmental disorder in the present scenario is ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). The US houses 6.1 Mn children contracting ADHD, as per study conducted by scientists at the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). However, this doesn’t mean that adults are absolved of this ailment. Close to 4.4% of the US-based adults suffer from ADHD. Also rates of diagnosis are rising.
Children carrying ADHD are likely to be hyperactive, and could be running, climbing, or jumping on continuous basis. They also have the tendency of getting easily distracted and find it challenging to pay heed. Even instructions fall on their deaf ears.
How could it be checked?
The good news on this part is that early diagnosis as well as treatment plans could bring ADHD under check. The CDC further states that more than 60% of the children based out of the US could manage it through medication, with less than 50% of them undergoing behavioural treatment.
As per experts, ADHD is a noteworthy public health concern linked with pathetic economic, social, and academic outcomes. Plus, there is an increased risk of the time invested in injury and hospital. Researchers at Ohio State University have inferred that diet abreast with vegetables and fruits is likely to help in reduction of inattention in the kids aged 6 to 12 showing symptoms of ADHD.
The study mentioned above was published in “Nutritional Neuroscience”, whose major objective was to understand the impact of quality of child’s diet on their attention levels.
The researchers have also analysed the data from bigger MADDY (Micronutrients for ADHD in Youth) study including 134 children aged between 6 and 12. Questionnaires were shot for collecting background information – say race, ethnicity, parent/guardian occupation, family income, and level of education.
There was digital food frequency questionnaire conducted to check diet quality and intake. Herein, high score depicts a much better adherence to Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Mood and ADHD were accessed by using surveys like Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire.
The First Non-Stimulant Treatment
Dr. Theresa Cerulli, Board-certified psychiatrist, has gone on records to state that the US FDA has approved the first non-stimulant treatment for adult ADHD on June 6, 2022. This step comes across as the first of its kind since the last 2 decades.
The healthcare personnel have also explained the other kinds of ADHD.
As per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, text revision (DSM-5-TR), the ADHD could be present in various forms, inclusive of combined presentation. The diagnosis will be entirely dependent on the symptoms found dominant.
- Inattention Presentation – Symptoms comprise inattention
- Hyperactivity and Impulsivity Presentation – Symptoms pertaining to hyperactivity and low impulse control
If diagnostic criteria of both the kinds of ADHD are met, the patient would be receiving ADHD combined presentation diagnosis.
As per the DSM-5, ADHD could present itself with 3 levels of severity –
- Mild – Minimal impairment
- Moderate – Impairment more than mild
- Severe – Noticeable symptoms causing substantial trouble at work and on social grounds
In all, earlier the diagnosis, quicker the treatment!
