Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic Cancer still opening up Skeletons from its Closet? Check this out!

Healthcare Pharmaceuticals

The University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center’s researchers have devised a cell nuclear receptor that could be activated by synthetic substances and high fat diets. In other words, the substances that are propagated as athletic performance enhancers could result in progression of various pre-cancerous lesions, thereby leading to pancreatic cancer (in mice as of now).

Research is still “on”

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma comes across as cancer’s highly lethal form. As such, hordes of strategies are required for treating the disease, or even preventing in the first place. Majority of pancreatic cancer cases do come through pre-cancerous lesions termed as “pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia”. Nearly 55-80% of adults aged 40 and above are expected to suffer from such low-grade pre-cancerous silent pancreatic lesions.

Nature Communications published a study of late, which stated that pre-cancerous pancreatic lesions in mice (similar to the ones found in humans) are abreast with higher levels of transcriptional receptor PPARδ (peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-delta).

PPARδ does regulate expression of broad spectrum of the key genes that go on to influence biological processes like formation of lipids. Activation on the part of PPARδ dramatically catalyzes progression of the pre-cancerous lesions into the pancreatic cancer.

The previous observations state that PPARV strongly promotes gastrointestinal cancers, but not much information is available regarding the same. The research regarding this is definitely “on”.

Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer Treatment

Then there is metastatic pancreatic cancer treatment doing the rounds. Symptoms are controlled using surgery. They include obstruction to gastric outlet, jaundice, or pain. At times, radiation may also be used for doing away with symptoms.

Chemotherapy could also help in improving upon pancreatic cancer symptoms as well as survival. The commonly used chemotherapy is gemcitabine. Drug combinations are inclusive of Tarceva (gemcitabine with erlotinib), gemcitabine with cisplatin, gemcitabine with capecitabine, and gemcitabine with nab-paclitaxel. Those with a sound physique could receive FOLFIRINOX (5-FU/leucovorin/oxaliplatin/irinotecan). Also, the drug called olaparib (Lynparza) has received approval for metastatic patients with BRCA gene mutation who have responded positively to chemotherapy.

There are also palliative treatments available for pancreatic cancer. The procedures like bile duct stents are capable of relieving jaundice, thereby fixing loss of appetite and reducing itching. Opioid analgesics along with a nerve block known as “celiac plexus block do help in relieving pain.

Pancreatic Amylase Reagent

Pancreatic amylase reagent is an enzyme that is present in the pancreatic fluids inside the small intestine. It’s responsibility is that of digestion of several kinds of sugars, and gets released into blood on pancreas getting diseased or inflamed. Amylase measurements are majorly used to diagnose and treat pancreatitis and the other pancreatic diseases. Levels of amylase are found to rise at a fast pace at the beginning of pancreatitis attack and do fall after nearly 2 days. The elevated levels could also be linked with ectopic pregnancy, mumps, gallbladder disease, perforated ulcer – apart from cancer of pancreas.

So, going the “Prevention is better than cure” ways, cancer could be controlled, but once contracted, it needs immediate course of treatment.
