Nature Medicine’s study states that 3 doses pertaining to Moderna mRNA Covid-19 vaccine have been found to be all the more effective against SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant as compared to the one against Omicron. However, protection against hospitalization is rendered.

Kaiser Permanente Southern California researchers did conduct a test-negative case-control study amongst 26,683 Covid-19 cases caused out of Omicron or Delta variants in December 2021. Out of these, 84% were Omicron and 16% were Delta. Delving deep, it was observed that occurrences of Omicron infections all across Southern California rose to 94.1% from 1.2% between Dec 6 and Dec 31.

Further research states that single dose of vaccine was 20.4% effective against Omicron and 56.7% effective against Delta.

3 doses were 86% effective against Delta after 60 days, whereas they were 29.4% effective against Omicron.

Covid-19 to not get Completely Eliminated?

It could be inferred that virus stays for some time. It is still unclear as to for how long would it continue to affect the people’s well-being and health. Governor Gavin Newsom, on February 17, was candid enough to confess that there was no specific end date being arrived upon. He stated this after new state plan for California was unleashed.

In other words, the people are being asked to “live with the virus”. Research has established that respiratory viruses can’t be eliminated but made less virulent through evolutionary biology. Joshua Lederberg, one of the Nobel Laureates in discovery of microbial genetics, has given a sage advice to devise science-based and ecological pathways so that living beings as well as these viruses co-exist, that too, with minimal harm.

On the other hand, it does not mean that people should be submissive towards the virus. Continuous research is “on” to curtail its ill-effects. The acronym called “SMARTER”, which means Shots, Masks, Awareness, Readiness, Testing, Education, and Rx (treatment) is amongst the inevitable reminders beckoning the brain cells.

Omicron not a Danger?

As far as India is concerned, Omicron is looked upon as a diluted version of Covid-19 as compared to Delta. Still, it’s not advisable to resort to being casual as the virus is still active in various parts of the world. The probability of more variants being thrown up can’t be ruled out.

The remedial and prevention measures are in place, so there’s nothing to worry about the current status. It’s just that, with uncertainty looming around the emergence of other variants, the healthcare personnel and people are on the toes. As on February 18, 2022, 97% of the adults who are eligible have been administered at least single dose. Also, 80% have been administered second dose as well. Nevertheless, 72% of those aged between 15 and 18 have been administered at least single dose.

University of Pittsburg’s Donald Burke, in his latest documentary, has mentioned that Covid-19’s upcoming variants may not be that dangerous as the previous ones. However, he also stated that they could adversely affect the new types of cell in human body. Overall, it’s a translucent condition regarding the further spread of Covid-19.
