Two doctors have been booked by the CBI for allegedly asking for a bribe of ₹1 crore from a supplier of medicines. The bribe was taken in return for listing the supplier as an agent of a pharmaceutical manufacturer. The officials announced the news on Friday which included the names of the two doctors: Vikas Gupta and Kajal Goldar.
The two doctors work under the ESI Corporation. Vikas Gupta is currently posted at the corporation’s Tirunelveli hospital whereas Kajal Goldar has been posted at the Kolhapur hospital. The officials from the CBI said that the two have been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The CBI took the action after it received a complaint from the ESI Corporation. After receiving a complaint from a medicine supplier from Delhi, the agency monitored the two doctors which ultimately culminated in the two being booked.
The allegation was that Vikas Gupta and Kajal Goldar took ₹1 crore from a medical supplier during 2016-17 to register a contract in the supplier’s name in the Central Rate Contract (CRC) of ESI. The supplier could then supply medicine and dressings to the corporation’s hospitals.
The name of the medical supplier is Basant Goel who has been accused of bribing the two doctors. He allegedly paid the amount to Vikas Gupta in parts on different dates. It included a bank transfer of ₹38 lac to Gupta’s account, ₹10 lac to his wife’s account and remaining amount in cash.
It turns out that the complaint was filed by Goel. The ESI Corporation then dug into the records of Gupta. It was then confirmed that the doctor received ₹48 lac from the supplier.
Besides that alleged bribe of ₹48 crore in his and his wife’s account, the ESI Corporation also questioned other large money transactions in the bank records of the doctor. However, Gupta has not provided a decent explanation for them as of now.
